Frequently Asked Questions About Online Will and Power of Attorney Builder
Your original Will belongs in a safe place. A copy belongs where your loved ones can find it.
EXIT Life Ready securely stores a digital copy of your Will alongside your healthcare information, Powers of Attorney, emergency contacts, and other essential documents—helping ensure your important information is organized and accessible when it matters most.
Important: In Ontario, your original signed Will remains the legal document used for probate. EXIT Life Ready securely stores a digital copy for your convenience and preparedness. Be sure to keep the original in a safe location and let your executor know where it is stored.
Most users complete their Ontario Will and Powers of Attorney in 15–30 minutes. You can save your progress at any time and return later if you need more time to consider your decisions.
The EXIT Life Ready Ontario Will & Power of Attorney Builder is designed for many adults with straightforward estate planning needs. However, you should consider seeking independent legal advice if your circumstances are more complex.
You may wish to consult a lawyer if you:
- Own a business or multiple corporations.
- Own significant assets or investment properties.
- Own real estate outside of Ontario or outside Canada.
- Have a blended family or complex family relationships.
- Have children with special needs or require a trust.
- Wish to establish testamentary or discretionary trusts.
- Have international assets or beneficiaries living outside Canada.
- Anticipate disputes among beneficiaries or family members.
- Have unique tax or estate planning considerations.
- Require customized legal advice or provisions beyond a standard Will or Power of Attorney.
If your situation is straightforward, our Builder can help guide you through preparing your Ontario Will and Powers of Attorney. If your needs are more complex, we encourage you to seek advice from a qualified lawyer.
Need personalized legal advice?
We’re pleased to recommend our trusted legal partner, Northern Law, for comprehensive estate planning and legal services.
In Ontario, there is no legal requirement to update your Will or Powers of Attorney on a set schedule. However, legal professionals generally recommend reviewing them every 3 to 5 years and whenever a significant life event occurs.
For EXIT Life Ready, I would encourage users to think in terms of “review regularly, update when life changes.”
As our life changes, so should our documents.
EXIT Life Ready is more than a Will Builder or a digital vault—it’s a complete life preparedness platform.
While many services focus on creating a Will or storing documents, EXIT Life Ready brings together the essential information you and your loved ones need before, during, and after life’s unexpected events—all in one secure location.
With EXIT Life Ready, you can:
- Create your Ontario Will and Powers of Attorney (Ontario residents).
- Securely organize your healthcare team, medication lists, allergies, and emergency contacts.
- Store important legal and personal documents in your encrypted Digital Vault.
- Prepare Emergency Child and Pet Preparedness Plans.
- Preserve your legacy through videos, photos, recipes, and personal messages.
- Access your information wherever you are, including while travelling.
- Keep your plans current by updating them as life changes.
Unlike many providers that offer a one-time legal document or simple document storage, EXIT Life Ready is an ongoing annual subscription designed to grow with you throughout your life. As your family, health, and circumstances change, your information can be updated so it remains accurate and accessible when it matters most.
Our philosophy is simple:
Planning isn’t about preparing for death—it’s about being prepared for life.
Whether you’re facing a medical emergency, travelling, supporting aging parents, caring for a loved one, or organizing your own future, EXIT Life Ready helps ensure that the right information is available to the right people at the right time.
Most providers help you create a document. EXIT Life Ready helps you create a plan—and ensures the information behind that plan is available when it’s needed most.
Yes. A Will or Power of Attorney created using the EXIT Life Ready Ontario Builder can be legally valid provided it complies with Ontario law and is properly executed.
To be legally effective:
- The information you provide must be accurate and complete.
- Your documents must be signed and witnessed in accordance with Ontario’s legal requirements.
- You must have the legal capacity to create the documents.
- The documents should reflect your true wishes and intentions.
The EXIT Life Ready Builder guides you through preparing your Ontario documents, but it does not provide legal advice. If your estate planning needs are more complex, we recommend consulting a qualified lawyer.
Important: Keep your original signed documents in a safe location and let your executor or attorneys know where they can be found. A digital copy stored in your EXIT Life Ready Digital Vault is intended to support organization and accessibility—it does not replace the original signed documents.
For an Ontario Will
To be legally valid, your Will must generally be:
- Signed by you.
- Signed in the presence of two witnesses.
- Both witnesses must also sign the Will.
Your witnesses should:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Be mentally capable.
- Be independent and have no personal interest in your Will.
Do not choose as a witness:
- A beneficiary named in your Will.
- The spouse of a beneficiary.
While a beneficiary witnessing a Will does not necessarily invalidate the entire Will in Ontario, it can affect that beneficiary’s gift and create legal complications. Independent witnesses are strongly recommended.
For an Ontario Power of Attorney
A Continuing Power of Attorney for Property and a Power of Attorney for Personal Care must generally be:
- Signed by you.
- Signed in the presence of two witnesses.
- Both witnesses must also sign the document.
The following cannot act as witnesses:
- The person you appoint as your attorney.
- Your attorney’s spouse or partner.
- Your spouse or partner.
- Your child or someone you treat as your child.
- Anyone under 18 years of age.
- A person under guardianship.
Best Practice
For both your Will and Powers of Attorney, we recommend choosing two independent adults who:
- Are at least 18 years old.
- Are mentally capable.
- Are not beneficiaries (for a Will).
- Are not named as attorneys (for a Power of Attorney).
- Have no personal interest in your estate.
This helps reduce the risk of future legal challenges.
Important: The EXIT Life Ready Builder prepares your Ontario documents based on the information you provide. It does not provide legal advice. If your estate planning needs are complex or you are unsure about the witnessing requirements, we recommend consulting a qualified lawyer.
For $99.99 CAD per year, you’ll receive your EXIT Life Ready Annual Subscription, which includes secure access to the app and, for a limited time, our Ontario Will & Power of Attorney Builder at no additional cost.
That’s more than just legal documents—it’s a complete preparedness platform designed to help you organize your healthcare, legal, emergency, and legacy information in one secure location.
The best time to create a Will is before you need one. Every adult should consider having a Will, regardless of age or the size of their estate.
You should consider creating or updating your Will if you:
- Turn 18 and want to decide who will manage your estate.
- Get married or enter a long-term relationship.
- Separate or divorce.
- Become a parent or guardian.
- Purchase a home or other significant assets.
- Start or own a business.
- Receive an inheritance.
- Experience a significant change in your financial situation.
- Want to choose who will act as your executor.
- Wish to leave specific gifts to family, friends, or charities.
- Want your wishes clearly documented to reduce stress for your loved ones.
A Will helps ensure that **your wishes—not someone else’s—guide how your estate is managed after your death.
The best time to create a Will is when you are healthy and able to make informed decisions—not during a crisis.
Did You Know?
Without a valid Will, your estate will be administered according to your province’s succession laws, which may not reflect your personal wishes or who you would have chosen to make decisions on behalf of your estate.
Your EXIT Life Ready account makes it easy to:
- Update your information whenever life changes.
- Generate revised documents through the Builder.
- Securely store your most current documents in your Digital Vault.
- Keep all of your healthcare, legal, emergency, and legacy information together in one secure location.
Remember: A Will or Power of Attorney is not a “set it and forget it” document. Reviewing it regularly helps ensure it continues to reflect your wishes and current circumstances.
Legal Disclaimer: The EXIT Life Ready Builder is designed to assist users in preparing documents based on the information they provide. It does not constitute legal advice or replace the services of a qualified lawyer. If you have complex legal, financial, or family circumstances, we recommend seeking independent legal advice.
